Anti-Bullying Workshop Empowers Sacramento Teens

  • 49% of kids report being bullied in the last month
  • Event connects youth and Elk Grove Mayor, Police Department, and black belt

South Sacramento teens and preteens will be able to address their concerns about bullying with local community leaders at an upcoming Anti-Bullying Workshop being held in Elk Grove on November 3rd. The workshop was organized by Face2Face Youth Group, a local nonprofit dedicated to improving the social and emotional well-being of youth.

“Half of all school-age kids say they were bullied in the last month,” said Face2Face co-founder and CEO, Margaret Arsenault, “but only 30 percent of them told an adult. Bullying is a big problem in schools and online. We wanted to provide an event where teens can not only be heard but also be empowered.”

At the two and one-half-hour workshop, teens and pre-teens will be treated to lunch and be able to mingle with and meet other guests and panel members. During the informal question-and-answer panel discussion, teens will have an opportunity to talk with local community leaders about bullying and how to address it. The goal is for leaders to hear from the youth, and for the teens to learn new tools for dealing with bullying when it occurs.

Confirmed guest panelists include Elk Grove City Mayor Steve Ly, Community Service Officer Kristopher Packwood from the Elk Grove Police Department, fourth-degree black belt and co-owner of Ajay’s Karate, Lydia Ajay, Mark and Margaret Arsenault, co-founders of Face2Face Youth Group, Inc., and Bobby Uppal, a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC-II).

While parents and guardians are welcome to stay and observe the workshop, Arsenault asks that they not participate in the discussions.

“We want the youth to be able to address their concerns,” Arsenault said, “We want to ensure the kids are able to be heard and benefit from a direct conversation with the panelists.”

The workshop will not only give teens an opportunity to express their concerns about bullying but will equip them to deal with physical assaults, as well, as participants will learn some simple but effective self-defense techniques from a renowned martial arts instructor.

“Bullying takes many forms,” Arsenault said, “from insults and public humiliation to physical aggression. What can you do when a bully grabs your arm, pins you against a wall, or puts you in a headlock? During the second half of the workshop, Mrs. Ajay will be teaching the kids some simple martial arts techniques to protect themselves.”

The Anti-Bullying Workshop is being held Saturday, November 3rd, from 12:00 Noon to 3:00 p.m., at the Teen Center USA in Elk Grove. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion. Registration is $10 and includes lunch.
