Teens attending the two and a half hour workshop will be treated to a pizza lunch, where they will meet with the guest speakers and community leaders. After lunch, the teens will participate in a discussion period, where they’ll discuss the topic of bullying.

The Force is Strong with this Anti-Bullying Event

ELK GROVE, Calif. (October 23, 2018) – The next Star Wars film is a ways off. Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled for release in December of 2019, more than a year from now. But teens in the Sacramento region will soon have a chance to meet some of the characters up close and in person.

Face2Face Youth Group has announced that members of the world-famous 501st Legion will be attending its Anti-Bullying Workshop in Elk Grove on November 3rd.

“We are thrilled to have the 501st at our event,” said Face2Face co-founder and Executive Director Margaret Arsenault. “The teens are going to have a great time with the Star Wars costumed characters while learning about the club’s ‘Heart of the Force’ initiative.”

The 501st has developed its very own comprehensive anti-bullying initiative called “Heart of the Force!” to spread the message that people can make a stand against bullies and become a Force for good.

Unless you’ve spent the last few decades on the Outer Rim, you’ve probably heard about the 501st Legion. It is a worldwide Star Wars costuming organization with more than 13,000 active members worldwide. Many of its members have appeared at charity events, bringing smiles to Dark Side and Light Side fans alike.

Stormtroopers and Sith Lords aren’t the only celebrities teens are likely to encounter at the workshop. Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly has confirmed he’ll be participating in the panel discussion, as will Officer Kristopher Packwood of the Elk Grove Police Department, and Lydia Ajay, co-owner of Ajay’s Karate.

“It’s a great opportunity for teens to voice their concerns and to feel heard by community leaders,” explained Arsenault. “This will help them feel connected to and supported by the community.”

Another aspect of emotional wellness is confidence, Arsenault explained. The second hour of the workshop is dedicated to teaching teens some simple but effective self-defense techniques. While kids aren’t likely to be bullied by the likes of Kylo Ren or Darth Maul in real life, real bullies can seem just as scary.

“Half of school-aged youth are bullied every month,” Arsenault explained, “and a third of them never report it to an adult. We want them to know how to defend themselves if they’re grabbed or pinned against a wall.”
